Smell Gas? Here’s What to Do—and What NOT to Do

Few things in your home deserve more caution than a natural gas leak. Gas is colorless, flammable, and highly dangerous when it escapes into your living space. Fortunately, your nose often gives you the first warning. That strong, sulfur-like odor (think rotten eggs) is added to natural gas to alert you when there’s a leak.

If you suspect a gas leak, here’s what you need to know—and do—right away.

✅ DO: Leave the Area Immediately

If the smell is strong or you feel dizzy or lightheaded, don’t try to find the source. Get everyone (including pets) out of the house right away and move to a safe distance.

❌ DON’T: Use Electronics or Flip Switches

Any spark—yes, even from flipping a light switch—can ignite a gas leak. Don’t turn anything on or off, and avoid using your cell phone until you’re safely outside.

✅ DO: Call 911 and Your Gas Company

Once you’re at a safe distance, report the leak to emergency services and your local gas utility provider. They’ll dispatch a technician to shut off service and assess the situation.

❌ DON’T: Try to Fix It Yourself

Gas line repairs are not a DIY job. Even small mistakes can result in leaks, explosions, or carbon monoxide poisoning. Always hire a licensed professional for any gas-related work.

✅ DO: Schedule a Professional Inspection

If your home had a leak—or even if you just suspect aging or corroded lines—schedule a professional gas line repair and replacement as soon as possible. It’s especially important if you’re adding new gas appliances or notice signs like:

  • Pilot lights frequently going out
  • Hissing sounds near gas lines
  • Higher-than-usual gas bills
  • Yellow or flickering burner flames
